The Brendan project In the summer of 2011, Sudley Infant School
in Liverpool embarked upon a challenging but enjoyable whole-school,
cross-curricular project* to learn about the life and times of an
adventurous Irish saint, St Brendan the Navigator. * Art, Dance, DT, Geography, History, Literacy, Music, PE and PSHE
| Brendan the Navigator St
Brendan, a monk and patron saint of boatmen, mariners, sailors,
travellers and whales, was born in Ireland about 488 AD in County Kerry.
After sailing about northwest Europe spreading the Christian faith and
founding monasteries, he embarked on his famous voyage to the west. In a
coracle, with 17 other monks, he searched the Atlantic for ‘The
Promised Land of the Saints’, encountering many mysteries and wonders. | | Bringing the school together
The project certainly delivered and enriched the curriculum. It also
created an enjoyable and uplifting sense of common purpose throughout
the school - parents and governors included.
| Praise for the project
According to Professor Patrick Buckland, chairman of Ireland in Schools,
The staff's skill and imagination in the planning and execution of such
an ambitious whole-school, cross-curricular programme are inspiring and
completely effective, as was clear from the enthusiasm and enjoyment the
pupils showed in demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of St
Brendan's life and times. | |
